Adjarian women’s handicrafts

Knitting and embroidery in Georgia and in particular in Adjara dates back to ancient times.

Adjarian women beautify household items with decorative sewing: Mutaka- bolster (hard pillow),  pillow cases, curtains, embroidering with  beads was also wide spread. They beautify cases of watches, woven casees of money, headbands  and chest part of dress with beads. Textile materials and “Yazma” (woman headgear wearing under the triangular headscarf ) were ornamented with a stencil. Ornamented stencils forms were made by Black Sea Kartvelian ethnics women.

Knitting of socks had an important part in the family. Unmarried women had to take away  in Mzitevi at least 10-15 pairs of woven socks  knitted by herself
